The TV docuseries “I Am Jazz“ was so well-received that TLC decided to renew it for a second season! The first new episode aired on June 8.
Despite his skepticism about “reality shows” in general, HuffPost commentator Kenyth Mogan had a very positive take on the series, posting a thoughtful and insightful review.
Having been mistreated in high school for coming out as being gay, Mogan said he could readily empathize with Jazz’s needing to face her own set of high school challenges, as shared in the TLC program. Jazz is fortunate to have her family’s unconditional love and support as she navigates these difficult times. About that, Mogan wrote:
“I am beyond impressed with the way her family has not only accepted her for who she is, but also with the fact that they have done so proudly and in a very public way. So many LGBTQ children are not only discouraged from being who they are, they are disgraced and discarded by the people who should love them unconditionally.”
Mogan went on to observe, “Just by loving their daughter and allowing her to speak her truth, they are saving lives, literally.”
In closing this HuffPost review, Mogan referred back to the last episode of “I Am Jazz” – Season 1, in which Jazz gave a very frank and revealing one-on-one interview with Kate Snow. Asked by Kate how she deals with the hate that comes her way, Jazz responded:
“When I see hateful comments, it doesn’t affect me. If people are going to judge me without fully understanding the content of my character, then their opinion just isn’t worth it.”
About which Mogan said:
“In a reality television world over-saturated with the worst of what America has to offer, it’s refreshing to see such grace, poise and brilliance from a young woman like Jazz Jennings, so keep it up girl, you rock!”
I couldn’t have put it any better. Thank you Kenyth Mogan, and of course, so much thanks to Jazz Jennings and her family for all they do in support of the trans / gender-nonconforming community.
